self portrait
artist statement
Painting lets me explore what’s here now and what’s happening. I’m not so interested in rendering familiar ‘appearances’ or making ‘pictures.’ Rather, I’m seeking to connect with an infinite world. I’m inspired by many artists. Paul Cezanne teaches me sanity, strength and balance. Joan Mitchell teaches that soaring visual color symphonies must be engineered as the most structurally sound bridge or building.
I’ve been lucky to have had teachers who’ve shown me that “freedom of expression” is earned by careful, honest and patient observation. In other words, hard work. And that all art is self-taught.
My goals are simple: To see and feel the structure and relationships around me with my whole heart and mind. To capture what’s meaningful. To release what doesn’t work.
To keep practicing.
Today you can see my work in private collections in the United States, Norway, St. Barth, French West Indies, and also here on my web site.
